Market Proves Success with Local Support

The weekly market on Friday in Camborne has now been running for eight months and two recent surveys in the town have shown that more people are coming into town on Friday to visit the market and go shopping in order to show their support for local producers.  The market is also in Redruth every Thursday.

A survey by Camborne Chamber of Commerce showed that 83% of businesses in the town think that the market is good or very good.  Whilst 50% of businesses also said that they have noticed an increase in business on Friday with comments including, "Customers say the market is good and they come in on Friday to pop to the market".

A further survey of 60 people visiting the Camborne market undertaken by CPR Regeneration, the Urban Regeneration Company for the Camborne, Pool and Redruth area showed that half of those visiting the market did so to support local producers.  A third of the people interviewed also came into Camborne for the market every week.

Camborne Town Council, which holds the contract for the market in Camborne is very pleased with the impact of the market and has renewed the contract with market manager Ivor Sirett.

The surveys also showed that people and businesses wanted to see a greater variety of Cornish produce and specific suggestions from local shoppers included an olive stall, deli stall, cheese stall and local crafts stall.

Ivor Sirett said, "This is great news for Camborne, Redruth and the market.  We are now established in the towns and stallholders have many regular customers who come in to buy local produce.  We are looking to build on this success and are working to attract new stall holders.  I am hoping that local producers will want to take the opportunity to join in with these growing markets."
