Gill Instance, Kathyrn Willoughby and Matt Johns celebrate the Aquamark certificate.
31 March 2010
Staff at Carn Brea Leisure Centre are celebrating after the charity gained national recognition for the quality of its swimming programme.
The centre's Swim School has been awarded premier standard in the Aquamark scheme, a quality accreditation run by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA).
As well as the quality of Carn Brea's swimming programme, the award recognises how successful it is in helping children to learn to swim.
Matt Johns, Carn Brea's Swim School manager, said: "This is a fantastic achievement for us here at Carn Brea and one that we're immensely proud of.
"It is fitting that the professionalism and dedication of our teachers has been recognised because popularity and success rates we are achieving are down to their great skills.
"We're already re-booking for the start of the next term, which begins on April 19, and we have a few places left. If people want to find out more about how we teach they can call me on 01209 722002."
The sessions at Carn Brea are also overseen by Gill Instance, the ASA's principal tutor in Cornwall who co-ordinated the work undertaken to achieve Aquamark status.
She said: "It's a real honour to gain this accreditation from the ASA, but what I think is equally important, especially as we're surrounded by sea, is that children in Cornwall are taught to swim and gain confidence in the water from an early age.
"I am proud that Carn Brea is playing a part in helping our users achieve this."
