HRH Duke of Kent Opens Pool Innovation Centre

A revolutionary business centre has been officially opened in Cornwall.

HRH the Duke of Kent unveiled the ceremonial plaque at the £12 million Pool Innovation Centre (PIC) in front of an audience of key people from the business community, new tenants of the centre and local suppliers.

The University of Plymouth is managing the PIC - the first of its kind in the county - on behalf of Cornwall Council. The centre was backed by £9 million of ERDF Convergence investment and almost £3 million from the South West RDA.

The landmark purpose-built, three-storey centre will have space for 49 offices of varying sizes, seven shared meeting rooms and a conference facility, and has been designed to meet the highest environmental sustainability standards.

Carolyn Rule, Cornwall Council Cabinet Member for the Economy and Regeneration, said: "It's very exciting to see the fantastic facilities that are available at this groundbreaking centre and I'm delighted that there are already enterprising companies in place.

"The set-up will provide a nurturing environment where businesses are encouraged to share knowledge and grow together - we hope this will act as the catalyst for the regeneration of the Camborne, Pool and Redruth area."
The building has been designed to provide flexible accommodation with units ranging in size from 25m² to 90m². To help tenant circulation and networking, all central services including reception, meeting rooms, conference facilities, toilets and kitchens will be shared.

Professor Julian Beer, University of Plymouth Director of Research and Enterprise and Pro-Vice Chancellor, said: "The Pool Innovation Centre was designed to provide the right environment for businesses to thrive in. This is just the start of the journey for us. The Pool Innovation Centre will establish the base - now we need to focus on the people and ensure that we are developing their skills and supporting their businesses to grow and prosper."

Nigel Tipple, Chief Executive of CPR Regeneration, said: "The opening of this building marks a great steop forward in the regeneration of this area.  The Pool Innovation Centre is a world class building in which local enterprises can grow and develop bringing increased prosperity and well-paid jobs."
